In
the last part of the 20th century, the wild migratory caribou populations
of the Quebec/Labrador peninsula have shown a rapid increase to more
than the one million animals. During this period Quebec caribou hunts
have become a major resource of the northern economy. Subsistence caribou
hunts now makes a significant contribution of meat to most northern
traditional communities, whereas sport hunting has burgeoned into a
lucrative activity for Quebec and Labrador.
The Range of the George River caribou herd (Quebec-Labrador) (200,000 km2) has changed significantly as the population increased to the extent of encompassing the entire northern peninsula. "THE NEW MIGRATION OF THE CARIBOU" For years, we have been hunting the caribou of the legendary George River Caribou Herd, the largest herd of caribou on earth. The feeding grounds of the George River Caribou herd used to be farther north, way out of range of Torngat's floatplanes. Recently, these caribou moved southward during their summer migration and our territories are now becoming the new caribou feeding range. The Québec-Labrador Caribou With the male's weight varying between 300 and 400 pounds, the Rangifer Tarandus or "Tuktuk" is another member of the deer family. It is a gregarious animal, and always on the move. The Quebec Labrador herd is the largest in the world. " Like all other deer, the caribou is gifted with fine hearing and a particularly keen sense of smell. In an open area, caribou can also easily detect movements from far away.
