Harry Martin

Visions Of This Land
Broken Wings
There are few if any, communities in Labrador, where Harry Martin's reputation as a
singer/songwriter is not known. From his native Cartwright since the early sixties, Harry
has been performing throughout Labrador in community concerts, night clubs, folk festivals
and many other special events where his music and unique style of presentation have
resulted in a loyal and appreciative following.
Like many "folk" based performing artists, in the early years of his career
Harry's musical influences included Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, Peter, Paul and Mary
as well as other performers who were part of the so called "folk revival".
While singing cover versions of other people's material, Harry began to develop his
own writing skills and in time, was including his own compositions on stage, much to the
delight and enjoyment of his audience.
As a Wildlife Officer for the Provincial Government, Harry travels the land along the
coast and into the interior or "the country" as the local people say. Much of
the inspiration for his music has been through his travels and experiences in the country.
The beauty of the landscape, the majestic mountains, the wild and winding rivers and the
quiet places, are all reflected in the music of Harry Martin.
Of particular interest to Harry however are the stories and anecdotes he has heard and
collected along the way. Harry's deep appreciation and respect for the "old
timers", the men and women and their way of life, can be felt in many of his songs.
The old pioneers, their triumphs, their tragedies and their contributions to the cultural
mosaic of Labrador, provide a recurring theme in the stories and music of Harry Martin.
In Recent years Harry's travels have taken him away from Labrador for performances on
the island of Newfoundland as well as several venues in major centers across Canada.
Included in his travels was a week long engagement representing Labrador in the Folk Life
Pavilion at EXPO '86 in Vancouver.. In October 1995 Harry was recognized as the first
recipient of the Caring For The Earth Award given by The Quebec Labrador Foundation. In
May of 1996 Harry performed as part of the Cabot 500 celebration in Bristol England and in
November performed as part of the week long show Labrador On The Edge in Toronto. In June
1997 Harry had one of the true highlights of his career when he performed two of his songs
for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the interpretation center in North West River. Harry
Continues to write and perform and is working towards a tour of the Arts and Culture
Centers throughout the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Harry Martin's recording on compact disc and cassette titled "Visions of This
Land", is a collection of his original composition. His words and music evoke images
of "the big land", but captured too is the spirit, mood and mystery of the
Labrador he loves.
